Chmura Economics & Analytics Addresses Economic Burden of Breast Cancer With Data and Donations
Based on the National Cancer Institute findings for 2020, Chmura estimates the financial impact of breast cancer in the U.S. to be $32.7 billion for 2024, highlighting state-by-state variations and the critical role of early detection.
[RICHMOND, VA and CLEVELAND, OH] – This October, in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Chmura Economics & Analytics is spotlighting the economic burden breast cancer places on families and healthcare systems across the country. To support ongoing research and treatment efforts, Chmura will donate 3% of all new JobsEQ sales throughout the month to the Massey Cancer Center in Richmond and the Cleveland Clinic Cancer Center.
Economic Burden of Breast Cancer in 2024
Using National Cancer Institute findings for 2020, Chmura estimates that the total cost of breast cancer in the United States in 2024 will reach $32.7 billion, an increase from $29.8 billion in 2020. Of this total, $28.8 billion is expected to be spent on medical services, while $3.9 billion will cover prescription drug costs.
“Our research highlights the significant economic impact that breast cancer continues to have on families, communities, and healthcare systems across the country,” said Dr. Christine Chmura, CEO and Chief Economist at Chmura Economics & Analytics. “By highlighting these costs, we hope to contribute to a broader understanding of the challenges faced by those affected and encourage more resources to be directed toward early detection and treatment.”
State-by-State Variations
Chmura’s research also highlights disparities in costs across states, reflecting differences in breast cancer incidence rates and healthcare expenses. While states with larger populations like California at first glance are labeled as bearing the highest cost at $3.1 billion, when dividing the total medical cost by the number of patients, California drops to the bottom of the list, with the lowest estimated per-capita cost of $89,000, and Tennessee logs the highest per-capita estimated cost at $122,000.
“As a woman-owned business, supporting the fight against breast cancer is deeply personal to us,” said Leslie Peterson, President of Chmura Economics & Analytics. “Our company’s success allows us to give back, and we are honored to partner with two leading healthcare institutions in their efforts to advance cancer research and improve patient outcomes.”
